Building Trust Across Faiths

The Anglican Inter Faith Commission

The Anglican Inter Faith Commission (AIFC) functions as the Anglican Communion’s primary instrument for high-level religious diplomacy and grassroots inter-religious support.

Operating at the intersection of diverse cultures and political systems, the Commission provides theological resources for peaceful co-existence in pluralistic societies and offers advocacy for Anglican communities facing persecution.

Mandate & Vision

The Commission exists to operationalise the Communion’s commitment to “replace diversity in conflict with diversity in collaboration”. This work is not a diplomatic luxury but a missional necessity, directly serving the Fourth Mark of Mission: “to transform unjust structures of society… and pursue peace and reconciliation”.

The Commission’s work is structured around four strategic pillars:

  • Relationship: Cultivating mutual trust and respect by encouraging provinces to strengthen their existing relationships with other faith communities.
  • Understanding and Education: Developing resources to educate Anglicans and prevent the “Othering” that leads to violence, including the study of other faith traditions in theological curricula.
  • Advocacy: Serving as a voice for the marginalised and voiceless, standing in solidarity with suffering communities through prayer and practical support.
  • Network Building: Building and embedding Anglican Inter Faith Networks in every Region, Province, and Diocese.

Conversation and Community

Leadership and Representation The Commission’s membership brings together bishops and practitioners from diverse cultural contexts to ensure it reflects varying political realities and ensure it is relevant to those on the front lines of inter-religious engagement.

How we work

The Commission employs a distributed operational model designed to bridge the gap between global strategy and local reality:

  • Regional Focus: We work through five regional groups to address context-specific strategies—such as secularism in Europe versus anti-conversion laws in South Asia.
Diplomatic Engagement: We function as a diplomatic corps, engaging with supreme religious authorities to sanction peace and bypass local radicalism.
Research-to-Action: We operate on a cycle of gathering data, analysing trends, and publishing multilingual resources to support the Communion.
