Environment and Sustainable Development
Global Conversations connect our faith with the world’s most pressing challenges. Across the Anglican Communion, we are giving voice to our faith – amplifying diverse perspectives, challenging injustice and transforming our world through prayer and practical action.
Discover the Communion’s response to the environmental crisis
For Anglicans, caring for God’s creation is not an optional extra; it is a fundamental part of our mission. The Fifth Mark of Mission calls us ‘to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth’.
From the highest levels of diplomatic advocacy at the United Nations to the planting of trees in local dioceses, Anglicans are united in responding to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Restore and Protect the Lungs of the Earth
‘Lungs of the Earth’ is a call for environmental action and advocacy. It invites Anglicans to restore and protect God’s world with a particular focus on three vital ecosystems that act as the planet’s natural lungs: oceans, forests and ice caps. Shaped by Anglican environmental advocates around the world, particularly indigenous Anglicans, the campaign reflects the wisdom, traditions and sustainable practices of indigenous communities in caring for the planet.

A Legacy of Hope: The Communion Forest
From restoring wetlands to planting community gardens, the Communion Forest creates a ‘virtual’ forest that spans the globe. It invites every diocese and parish to express their commitment to the Fifth Mark of Mission through tangible acts of restoration.
Launched as a practical, spiritual, and symbolic response to the environmental crisis, it serves as a lasting legacy of the 2022 Lambeth Conference. It connects local activities of conservation with a global vision of hope.
