Theological Education - The Bible in the Life of the Church

The aim of this work is to motivate a deeper engagement with the Bible across the Communion and develop an understanding of the way that we do this.

“I see this project as utterly foundational for our life together: I can hardly stress that enough. It raises some fundamental questions that we share: What place does Scripture have in our life together? How do we engage with and interpret what we read in its pages? Do we understand how others in the Communion, often because their context is different from our own, do this? Can their context and perspectives be a gift to mine? In exploring some of these questions – together – I am convinced that our appreciation of the Bible may be transformed and enriched.

Why the 'Bible in the Life of the Church' project? The joy and challenge of being Anglican is that we engage with faith and Scripture in different ways. This can be both exciting and enriching but also difficult and confusing. This project is seeking to offer signposts of understanding as we journey together.

Now in its second phase the project is seeking:

  1. To make the work of the project properly and widely known across the Communion.
  2. To collect, develop and distribute resources that will encourage and equip church leaders to help congregations transform their understanding of how the Bible is used and aid that practice.
  3. To help identify and explore the basis for a global Anglican hermeneutic.

Deep Engagement, Fresh Discovery explores the way this engagement with and interpretation of Scripture looks like in different parts of the Anglican Communion. It is accompanied by a significant collection of further educational resources to encourage us, as a Communion, to deepen this engagement. The Report and these resources are offered with an invitation to use them to deepen our love of the Bible and the rich treasures its pages offer.
