Diocese of Dhaka - The Church of Bangladesh

Companion Diocesan Links have been a means of developing relationships and mutual partnership in mission throughout the dioceses and parishes of the Anglican Communion for many years. The Diocese of Dahaka - Church of Bangladesh is seeking a new link and has given information on the diocese below. Brief history of Diocese:

We were originally part of the Diocese of Calcutta India, but after the war of Independence, Bangladesh came into being in 1972, The Church of Bangladesh became an Independent Church. In 1991 a second Diocese was formed so that the Church of Bangladesh comprised the Diocese of Dhaka and the Diocese of Kushtia.

Any previous or existing Links:

No existing Links
Previous Links with the Dioceses of North Kanto, Japan and Central Pennsylvania, USA.

Reason for wanting a Link:

We would like to share with Dioceses in similar situations to ourselves for fellowship and mutual encouragement.

What expectations you have of the Link?

We do not have high expectations, as we are a poor church with people of low educational standard. We also have very few people who are able to communicate in English and who have access to email/internet facilities. (Our language is Bengali). However, a Link should be an enriching and encouraging experience for those of us involved.

What part of the world you would like your Link to be?

Asia and Europe

Describe the style and patterns of church life and ministry in your diocese.

Although we are a United Church of Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist churches, our tradition and practice in Dhaka Diocese has historically been high Church although we are now more moderate. We have 5 city parishes (4 within the capital city of Dhaka) and 37 village parishes. We have our own liturgy, worship is in Bengali. As we are a Muslim country some of our parishes have their main Eucharist/worship service on Friday and some on Sunday. Our people are poor and we feel our calling from God is to exercise a holistic ministry to both our own people and the Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Tribal religion people around our 2 deaneries and city parishes. We have a large development wing of the church (CBSDP) and a separate department dealing with children and youth and city slum community work.

Would you like your Link diocese to reflect or contrast with the pattern described above?

We would welcome a Link with a more vibrant Church so that we could each share the best of both traditions.
